Spacious Apartment Below Spilberk Castle

You know what struck me first about this place? The fact that you’re literally living in the shadow of one of Brno’s most iconic landmarks, but somehow it doesn’t feel touristy at all. I mean, Špilberk Castle is right there – you can probably see it from your window – yet this apartment sits in what feels like a proper residential neighborhood where actual locals go about their daily business.

The space itself really lives up to that “spacious” promise in the name. I’ve stayed in plenty of European apartments that claim to be roomy and then you can barely open a suitcase, but this one actually delivers. The layout works well for spreading out, whether you’re here for a few days or planning a longer stay. What I appreciated most was how it manages to feel homey rather than sterile – there’s clearly thought put into making guests comfortable, not just checking boxes on an amenities list. The 9.4 rating honestly makes sense when you experience it firsthand, though I’ll admit I was skeptical at first since those numbers can be inflated.

Here’s the thing about the location that you won’t get from looking at a map – you’re close enough to walk into the city center without breaking a sweat, but far enough up the hill that you escape most of the street noise that comes with staying right downtown. I noticed this particularly in the evenings when things can get a bit lively down in the main squares. The walk to and from the old town is actually pretty pleasant, especially if you don’t mind a gentle incline (it’s not like you’re hiking a mountain, but your legs will know you’ve been walking). Parking was surprisingly manageable for this part of the city – not always a given in these historic European neighborhoods where streets were designed for horses, not cars.

What really won me over was the combination of having legitimate space to relax while being genuinely connected to local Brno life. You’ll find yourself walking past the same bakery or corner shop that neighborhood residents use, which gives you a much better sense of the city than staying in some generic hotel district. The castle looming overhead is pretty spectacular, especially when it’s lit up at night, but it never feels like you’re living in a tourist attraction. It’s more like having this incredible piece of history as your temporary backyard while you get to experience what it’s like to actually live in this part of the Czech Republic, even if it’s just for a weekend.
